Saturday Sundae: Wigan make Roy Hodgson regret patronising them
Robin van Persie adds a few million to his value; Joey Barton and Craig Bellamy get along; Martin Atkinson is Mr Consistency
MAN OF THE DAY
Michel Vorm was outstanding again in goal for Swansea, saving a Clint Dempsey penalty, securing his seventh clean sheet and even trending on Twitter. Vorm cost Swansea £1.5m – David de Gea cost Manchester United £18.9m.
TEAM OF THE DAY
Wigan came from behind to win away at West Brom, hours after being royally patronised by Roy Hodgson. Hodgson said Wigan’s summer bid for Peter Odemwingie was “a little bit like West Brom trying to sign Lionel Messi”.
GOAL OF THE DAY
Robin van Persie for Arsenal – a blistering, almost-as-good-as-Van Basten volley, from a striker with the confidence to try anything. Added a few extra million to Man City’s opening offer.
LOWEST MOMENT
Bolton losing 2-1 at home to Villa, and sliding grimly to the bottom of the table. Owen Coyle’s odds of being the next manager sacked are 7-2 – the bookies say only Steve Kean is on shakier ground.
MOST CONSISTENT
Referee Martin Atkinson showing Dan Gosling a red card in Newcastle’s defeat at Norwich. It was Atkinson’s 17th dismissal in the Premier League since the start of last season – more than any other referee.
ANSWERED QUESTION
Joey Barton meets Craig Bellamy – who gets sent off first? On paper it looked like a brilliant pantomime head-to-head as QPR visited Anfield, but ended with just a mild case of verbals. Bellamy was booked for dissent, but that was as explosive as it got. Disappointing.
STAT OF THE DAY
Norwich’s Grant Holt commits a foul every 22 minutes – more often than anyone else in the Premier League.
PLUS: CRUELLEST FINISH
Stuart Beavon’s last-minute winner in the tenser-than-tense meeting of League One’s bottom two clubs – Wycombe coming from behind to beat visitors Chesterfield 3-2. A long, cold journey home.

Dalglish not ready to class Carroll and Suárez among Liverpool greats
• The more they play together the better they’ll get, says Dalglish
• Paul Scharner accuses Luis Suárez of diving for a penalty
Kenny Dalglish was just finishing his press duties, satisfied that he had praised the way that Andy Carroll and Luis Suárez had
