Football Weekly podcast: Beckham’s World Cup over

It’s a sad day in podland, and not just because Phil Brown has been relieved of his duties at Hull City.

On your brand new Football Weekly, we sing an ode to David Beckham, whose World Cup dream is over in the wake of a potentially career-ending achilles injury (although that cut under his eye looks fairly nasty too). James Richardson and a dangerously sleep-deprived Rob Smyth shed a tear.

Before we get to that, proper journalist Owen Gibson looks ahead to Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Internazionale. Plus, there’s all the usual gubbins about the Premier League title race – could it all come down to goal difference? – and the fight for fourth place. Can Tottenham Hotspur really hang on in the face of the crumbling challenge from Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Manchester City?

Finally, Sid Lowe tells us about a weekend of hat-tricks and theatrics in La Liga, and Rafa Honigstein rounds up all the action from the Bundesliga.

Football Weekly podcast: Terry strong arms Chelsea into the FA Cup semi-finals

The pod squad is suited and booted for your brand new Football Weekly.

We start with the FA Cup, where Harry Redknapp could be set for another encounter with Portsmouth, and Aston Villa came from behind against Reading to set up a semi-final with Chelsea – for whom John Terry was the perfect gentleman in his victory celebration and post-match interview. Barry Glendenning gives his thoughts.

James Richardson looks ahead to Milan’s trip to Manchester United in the Champions League, and Sean Ingle remembers that Liverpool are still involved in Europe (and Fulham and Juventus too, for that matter).

Sid Lowe tells us about a dramatic weekend in Spain, where Real Madrid went ahead of Barcelona in La Liga for the first time in three months.

Finally, John Ashdown regales us with tales from the Championship, where it is Newcastle United’s title to lose. That said, stranger things have happened, especially to the Magpies. Good job they’ve got Spiderman playing on the wing.

Football Weekly podcast: Tragedy off the pitch and drama on it as the Africa Cup of Nations begins

It’s a full-on edition of Football Weekly, as James Richardson, Barry Glendenning, and Sean Ingle reflect on a remarkable few days in football.

Jonathan Wilson brings us the latest from Angola, where – despite the attack on the Togo team bus on Friday which put the tournament in jeopardy – the Africa Cup of Nations got under way with an astonishing opening game.

Kevin McCarra looks back on Arsenal’s latest failure to seize the advantage in the Premier League title race, as well as Manchester United’s continuing malaise, Birmingham City’s 12-match unbeaten streak, and Liverpool director Tom Hicks Jr’s foul-mouthed email exchange with a fan.

Finally, Sid Lowe reveals the Spanish for wunderkind as he marvels at Racing Santander’s Sergio Canales, and Paolo Bandini wraps up a stonking weekend in Serie A.

You know what to do. Have a listen and post your comments on the blog below, or find us on Facebook and Twitter. And if you want to waste time on YouTube, check out this rather splendid strike by Massimo Maccarone.
