• Everton agree short-term deal for Marcus Hahnemann
• Kenny Dalglish says people are obsessed with Andy Carroll

Everton

The USA goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann has joined Everton on a short-term deal. Hahnemann has signed a contract with the Merseyside club until January after being released by Wolves in the summer. The 39‑year‑old – who has nine USA caps – will provide back-up at Goodison Park to his compatriot Tim Howard and Jan Mucha. David Moyes, the Everton manager, said: “It is difficult when you only have two senior goalkeepers – it only needs one of them to go down and then you are in trouble. Marcus is friends with Tim. It is after the transfer window has closed and we had to look for someone who we knew.” PA

Liverpool

Kenny Dalglish has claimed there is an unhealthy and unfair “obsession” with Andy Carroll. Liverpool’s £35m signing from Newcastle United last January is taking his time to find form and fitness on Merseyside and regularly finds himself warming the bench but Dalglish maintains this slow-burn beginning to Anfield life should not raise eyebrows. “I think people are obsessed with Andy Carroll,” Liverpool’s manager said before tacitly acknowledging the 22-year-old England striker remains a work in progress. “I’m an old guy and I’m still learning; I don’t understand the paranoia with Andy. People talk about him like they know him. They don’t know him. They talk about his lifestyle … what lifestyle? Everybody is obsessed with Andy Carroll.” Louise Taylor

Fifa

Fifa’s ethics committee has handed out its fourth ban connected with the bribery scandal by suspending the leading Caribbean official Colin Klass for 26 months. Klass, a member of the Caribbean Football Union’s (CFU) executive committee and head of the Guyana FA for 22 years, was also fined 5,000 Swiss francs (£3,573). Fifa said in a statement that Klass “was found to have breached various articles of the Fifa code of ethics (articles 3, 9 and 14) following an investigation related to the special meeting of the CFU held in Trinidad & Tobago on 10 and 11 May 2011.” After the meeting, which led to Mohamed bin Hammam being given a life ban for bribery, which he is fighting, Klass orchestrated a campaign of support for Jack Warner who resigned as a Fifa vice-president in June after himself being charged with bribery. Queens Park Rangers offer Liverpool’s Joe Cole a lifeline

• Premier League newcomers want Cole on season’s loan deal
• Liverpool keen to get midfielder’s contract off wage bill

Queens Park Rangers have offered Joe Cole the chance to revive his Premier League career on a season-long loan from Liverpool.

The 29-year-old former Chelsea midfielder has endured a difficult time at Anfield, where he made only nine Premier League starts last season and barely featured after Kenny Dalglish replaced Roy Hodgson as manager in January. Liverpool are keen to get his £90,000-a-week contract off their wage bill.

West Ham United are also interested in their former player, who is believed to have put his Merseyside home up for sale. But the prospect of remaining in the top flight may sway Cole towards QPR, providing they meet Liverpool’s financial requirements.

John W Henry sets Liverpool’s sights on the Champions League

• ‘If we don’t [qualify], it would be a major disappointment’
• Henry believes Manchester United are favourites for title

The Liverpool owner, John W Henry, has warned Kenny Daglish and Liverpool that failure to qualify for the Champions League next season would be a “major disappointment” for the club.

“It’s too early for us to talk about winning the league,” said Henry according to reports on Monday. “[But] our main goal is to qualify for the Champions League. If we don’t, it would be a major disappointment.”

Henry’s comments came in the wake of Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Valerenga – the Merseyside club have now drawn one and lost two of their last three friendlies.

The American also said he believed Manchester United are the favourites to reclaim their Premier League title. “In my opinion Manchester United [are the team to beat]. They have a good squad and look good,” he said.
